First Flower

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????Early spring flowers are a special sight, telling us that a brighter season is on its way, and the primrose (prima meaning first in Latin) has to be one of the most uplifting.
The flowers are scented, so a good source of food for the first bumblebees and butterflies, and both flowers and leaves are edible, the flavour ranging between mild lettuce and more bitter salad greens. The leaves can also be used for tea, apparently having a calming effect, and the young flowers can be made into primrose wine.
Look out for them now in woods and on shaded banks.
